biography

I was born in St Peter's which is as near as you can get to Byker.
I was the first born so I had no hand-me-downs and from birth to the age of twelve years I was to be found naked. I do what I do to the best of my ability...
so there you go...

George Welch was born in Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne, and spent much of his youth playing in bands - first as a drummer in The Mercenaries, later playing guitar, cittern and vocals in Heritage and Crooked Oak. He was later in duos with Paul Dickman, harpist Tristram Robson and for many good years as The Cheap Sunglasses Serenaders with Phil Ranson. He went on to add ukulele to his list of talents and make the instrument so popular in the North East.

In a duo with fiddle player, Stewart Hardy, they delight audiences with their mixture of well chosen and much accomplished tunes and songs.

.... "Once you have heard George perform his songs, accompanied by his own guitar playing and Stewart’s fiddle, you will not be left in any doubt that the success of this highly entertaining duo is built on solid musical foundations."

... and in a duo with Christine Jeans...

.... "George and Christine tickle the strings of various ukuleles, guitars, banjos and even a miniature bass, while simultaneously tickling our funny bones and touching our hearts with songs traditional and modern, on themes of love, brotherhood and hard work.'"
